If you’re planning to sell online in India, you’ll almost certainly end up choosing between two platforms: Shopify and WooCommerce. I’ve built stores on both, for jewellery, fashion and product brands, and both are excellent. But they suit very different businesses.
Here’s a practical comparison focused on what matters to Indian businesses: cost, payments, ease of use, flexibility and growth.
The short answer
- Choose Shopify if you want the simplest way to launch and run a store, don’t want to deal with hosting or updates, and are comfortable paying a monthly subscription.
- Choose WooCommerce if you want full control and lower running costs, need custom features, or already have a WordPress website.
Shopify vs WooCommerce at a glance
| Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | All-in-one hosted store platform | Free e-commerce plugin for WordPress |
| Hosting | Included | You buy your own hosting |
| Running cost | Monthly plan + paid apps | Hosting + optional paid plugins |
| Ease of use | Very easy | Easy once set up, more to manage |
| Customisation | Good, within Shopify’s limits | Almost unlimited |
| Indian payments (Razorpay, UPI, COD) | Supported through apps and gateways | Supported through plugins |
| Content and blogging | Basic | Excellent (it’s WordPress) |
| Maintenance | Handled by Shopify | Updates and backups are your responsibility |
1. Cost: monthly fees vs running costs
Shopify charges a monthly subscription, and most stores add a few paid apps for things like reviews, WhatsApp chat or advanced filters. If you use a third-party payment gateway, Shopify may also charge an extra transaction fee depending on your plan. Always check Shopify’s current India pricing before you commit.
WooCommerce itself is free. You pay for hosting (good WooCommerce hosting in India is affordable), your domain, and any premium plugins you need. Over a few years, WooCommerce is usually cheaper to run, especially for stores with lower sales volume.
With either platform, your payment gateway (like Razorpay) charges a fee per transaction, typically around 2%.
2. Ease of use
Shopify wins here. Hosting, security, speed and updates are all handled for you, and the admin is very beginner-friendly. If you’ve never run a website before, Shopify lets you focus on selling.
WooCommerce is also easy to use day-to-day once it’s set up properly, but someone has to take care of updates, backups and hosting. With a good developer and a maintenance plan, this isn’t a problem.
3. Payments, shipping and GST in India
Both platforms work well for Indian businesses. You can accept UPI, cards, net banking and wallets through gateways like Razorpay, offer cash on delivery, connect shipping partners, and show GST-inclusive prices with proper invoices.
The difference is how you get there: Shopify uses its app store, while WooCommerce uses WordPress plugins. WooCommerce gives you more flexibility for unusual rules, such as custom COD charges, pincode-based delivery or B2B pricing.
4. Design and flexibility
Shopify themes look polished out of the box and can be customised well. But some deeper changes need Shopify-specific coding, or simply aren’t possible.
WooCommerce, built on WordPress, can be shaped into almost anything: custom product configurators, wholesale portals, memberships or subscriptions. If your business model is unique, WooCommerce gives you room to grow.
5. SEO and content marketing
Both can rank well on Google. Shopify handles the technical basics nicely. WooCommerce has the edge for content-led growth, because WordPress is the best blogging platform there is, and tools like Rank Math give you fine control over every page.
If you plan to grow through SEO, with guides, blogs and buying advice, WooCommerce makes that easier.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Shopify if:
- You want to launch quickly and avoid any technical work
- You sell standard physical products (fashion, jewellery, accessories, D2C brands)
- You prefer a predictable monthly cost with hosting and security included
Choose WooCommerce if:
- You want lower long-term running costs and full ownership
- You need custom features or unusual pricing and shipping rules
- You already have a WordPress website, or plan to invest in content and SEO
Frequently asked questions
Can I move from Shopify to WooCommerce later (or the other way)?
Yes. Products, customers and orders can be migrated between platforms. It takes planning, especially to protect your Google rankings with proper redirects, but it’s very doable.
Which is better for a jewellery or fashion brand?
Both work beautifully. Shopify is great for brands that want simplicity. WooCommerce is better if you need detailed product options, custom pricing (like gold-rate-based pricing) or rich content.
How much does it cost to build an online store?
Typically ₹60,000 to ₹3,00,000+ in India, depending on design, products and features. See my full guide: How much does a website cost in India?
